The story
Ramadan has begun, and the child hangs a fanous, a lantern of coloured glass, in the window. Grandma explains what the month is for: from sunrise to sunset the grown-ups do not eat or drink, to practise patience, to say thank you for what they have and to remember people who have less. Young children don't have to fast; the child joins in other ways, with kind words and helping hands. All afternoon they help set the iftar table: dates in a little bowl, cups of water, warm soup and bread. When the sun slips away and the call to prayer drifts over the rooftops, the family breaks the fast together with a date and a sip of water. After dinner the child carries a plate of food to the neighbours, then joins the lantern walk down the glowing street, their fanous swinging like a small moon.
