The story
The house is dressed for Christmas: a tree with a wonky star, socks along the mantel, the smell of something baking. The child cannot sleep, so they keep watch by the window and see the whole quiet night — snow on the street lamp, a cat crossing the garden, a light going out next door. In the morning the best present turns out to be the one they wrapped themselves and gave away. If the child is still a baby, they watch the night from a grown-up's arms, and the present they give is wrapped with a grown-up's help.
