The story
On New Year's Eve, the family gathers at the kitchen table with a big glass jar and a pile of golden paper stars. On each star, everyone writes a thank-you for the old year or a wish for the new one. Grandpa's star says thank you for the summer picnic; the littlest cousin's is just a scribble. The child thinks hard, then writes, with a little help, a wish for everyone, and folds it small. Tonight they may stay up a little late! In pyjamas and blankets, they play games, sip cocoa and watch the clock creep towards midnight. Then everyone counts: ten, nine, eight… three, two, one! Far over the rooftops, fireworks bloom like flowers, seen snug from the window. In the morning they open the jar and read the stars aloud. The child's says: “A happy year for all of us, and for everyone else too!” and the whole family smiles.
