It is the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the full-moon harvest festival many families keep, and the whole family is coming home. Aunties, uncles and cousins crowd into the courtyard, and the child helps Grandma press sweet lotus paste into round mooncakes, each stamped with a flower. When the moon rises, big and golden, Grandma cuts a mooncake into pieces so everyone gets a share, and tells the old story: long ago, a kind lady named Chang'e floated up to the moon, and she lives there still with a little jade rabbit. Can you see the rabbit? Then everyone carries paper lanterns, a rabbit, a fish and a star, along the river path. Back home, the child thinks of a cousin who lives far away and whispers a wish to the moon. Far away, under the very same moon, the cousin is looking up too.
