The story
Beneath fluttering red, black, and green banners on the sunny town green, a jubilant Juneteenth festival is underway. Hand-in-hand with a wise community storyteller dressed in vibrant kente cloth, the child carries a stitched freedom quilt square sewn with red and yellow stars. Golden trumpets, trombones, and bass drums sound a triumphant march as families picnic on barbecued ribs, sweet red velvet cake, and clinking glasses of strawberry soda. Stopping at the memorial gazebo, the storyteller recounts the joyous day in Galveston when freedom finally rang out across the land, reminding the children of the unyielding strength, hope, and love carried by generations past. Waving their quilt square high in the confetti-strewn air, the child dances to the brass band, hearts overflowing with pride and freedom.
