On the first night of Hanukkah, the family gathers around the menorah. With a grown-up's hand around theirs, the child lights the helper candle, the shamash, and then one small candle. Grandpa tells the old story: long ago, when the Temple in Jerusalem was made ready again, there was only a little jug of oil, enough for one day, yet the lamp kept burning for eight. Each night one more candle glows. There are crispy latkes with applesauce, jam-filled sufganiyot dusted with sugar, and a spinning dreidel that makes everyone squeal with laughter when it lands on gimel. The family sets the menorah in the window so the whole street can share the light. On the last night, with all eight candles shining, the child wraps up their chocolate coins as presents for the new neighbours, and the light feels bigger than ever.
