The story
On the last evening of Ramadan, the family climbs up to the rooftop to watch for the new moon. The child spots it first: a thin silver crescent. Eid is tomorrow! New clothes wait, folded, at the end of the bed. In the morning the whole neighbourhood gathers in the sunshine for the Eid prayer, and afterwards everyone hugs and says “Eid Mubarak!” Then it is off to the grandparents' house, where trays of ma'amoul and sweets cover the table and the grown-ups hand out eidiya in bright envelopes. The child remembers the old neighbour across the courtyard, spending Eid on her own, and decides to share: with a grown-up, they carry her a plate of sweets, a drawing and a little gift bought with their eidiya. That night lanterns glow, cousins laugh, and the crescent moon smiles down on them all.
