The story
Diwali is coming, and the whole house gets ready. The child helps sweep every corner and hang marigold garlands over the door, and with Grandma draws a rangoli on the doorstep: a lotus of pink, saffron and green powder. At dusk, in new clothes, the family lights rows of little clay diyas along the windowsills and steps until the whole lane twinkles. Grandma explains what the lamps mean: light wins over darkness, and kindness wins over unkindness. So the child carries a plate of laddoos to every neighbour, even the one who never smiles, and gets a smile back. Then it is off to the aunties and uncles across town for more sweets, hugs and giggling cousins. On the way home the grown-ups wave sparklers at a safe distance, and on the doorstep the child's own little diya is still glowing, the brightest light on the lane.
