The story
The child wakes up early on Mother's Day with a plan: breakfast in bed, flowers from the garden, and a card with a poem in it. Nothing goes the way it was drawn on the plan — the toast is dark, the vase tips, the poem loses a line — and the morning turns out to be better for it, because what Mum keeps is not the breakfast but the fact that somebody got up early. Mum is still half asleep when the tray arrives. If the child is still a baby, a grown-up carries out the plan with the baby in their arms.
