The story
One sunny morning in the park, the child is ready to ride a bike without stabilisers for the very first time. Helmet on, strap clicked, bell tested: ding-ding! At first the front wheel wobbles this way and that, and the handlebars wiggle like jelly. On the third try the bike tips slowly over onto the soft grass. “Oops!” Nobody is hurt: the child sits up laughing, a daisy stuck to their helmet. A grown-up holds the back of the seat and jogs alongside: “Eyes ahead, keep pedalling!” Pedal, pedal, pedal… and quietly, the grown-up lets go. The child is riding all by themselves! They whoosh past the duck pond, under the big trees and all the way round the path, with the grown-up cheering. Tired and proud, they share an ice cream on the bench and plan tomorrow's ride.
